I think it's the ICH9 and it's a software raid environment. But i think you should do some research into your own raid controller on that board. In a hardware raid with a big expensive adaptec card then raid 5 is faster. I'm still unsure about the raid 5 comments people are giving. Something like this might help with the cpu cooling it should fit on your mother board, there is a larger variant as well.
Do some digging tho and see if the raid controller drivers have an issue in 64bit before you shell out for one version or the other. well some of them You should also be able to find drivers for your board no problem. Im really not experienced with WHS so im not sure what i can to about locking it? i do like the idea of only allowing users only w/r new though my shop my missus doing something crazy lol and i really like the idea of remote access without moving from my workstation lol i also would like to be able to run the remote desktop app i have on my phone to access it alsoīackwards compatible, and it's had it's service pack so it's had all it's bugs worked out of it. i think its called trend, im not sure if thats the way to go? and dont know much about them ether at my work we have a firewall on the server and all the workstation firewalls disabled then we have a virus scan that runs once a week. lol i really didn't think of that, i think strong firewall will be needed also. Yes most of the files will com from the workstation and through downloads, i have about a 1 TB on ext drives atm that i will load up also and as far a virus protection goes. it does look a bit like over kill lol, i am hoping with the green drives that i get a little less heat in there also. Hey man, I wanted to go with the 4U case cause i have a rack with a few other components, and i wanted to allow for expansion in the future with a possible new build. Your server will be whatever you decide it will be, and you will learn to live with the +'s and -'s in your own way. I'm not ranting BTW, just putting ideas for you to be thinking about in the air. The CM also provides total cooling on all components so how are you going to match that with the 4U. Or to go with a passive and fan combo to keep the system running when the temps spike. The 690 II would allow for a larger passive cooler.
You will only have acess to stock and small coolers. How are you going to deal with heat in a 4u case. And are you going to remote desktop it to your workstation so you never need to move to do this. Is is going to run on a modified Guest account with no permissions other than read and write new, then you have to log in as admin to actually do anything with the os. How are you going to go about locking the OS to prevent problems arrising. How are you going to go about getting files to the server? Will you be using it to download, or will you be using one of the workstations? How are you going to virus protect the server if your doing direct downloads to it, and how is that program going to affect the server speed when it fires up for a scan. I'm not sure how constrained the 4U will be. This case also provides space arround the HD's for airflow. A good cheap example would be the CM 690 II.
You can get a cheaper full tower and still have the space to fit a 4 drive raid and the OS drive.
